Time for a little experiment

This weekend the temps were on the warm side but not like earlier in the week, and I thought, since mom was out of town, I would take the kids on a little bike adventure.  Let's ride to the Garden I said. Sure the kids said.  I wasn't expecting it to be that easy It's about 2 miles from our house down to the garden plot but they were psyched.  Since I was expecting some challenge I thought I'd add some by conciving a way to bring the dog to the garden with us.  Success.  Plus I done tuckered the kids out with riding and skidding and wheelie popping.  Party.

I vow

to commute by bike to work in some configuration at least once a week. Until I can't.  Yesterday I rode from work to home and this morning I rode the reverse.  It works well for the time constraints of needing to be at work on time and seeing the family in the evening.  Plus it's do-able for my current fitness level.  Hopefully by the end of the summer the 21 miles one way will be nothin.  The other method I've been using on my rides is to drive part of my commute and ride the rest.  This method has ranged from 16-22 miles round trip.  I'm liking the longer rides once a day better at this point, but it was hot this morning.

when the future self of this kid cries.  I've seen this photo a few times here and here and it gets me thinking.  A-- and R-- better watch out, plans are brewing.

Mr. Rogers dropping knowledge

The Rural Studio is an amazing project.  A friend of mine went on a service trip with high school students to work with these folks and was telling me all about it a few weeks ago.  I was instantly psyched because this combines my interests in recycling and design/build. From their website:

"The Rural Studio, conceived as a strategy to improve the living conditions in rural Alabama while imparting practical experience to architecture students, completed its first project in 1994. 

"The Rural Studio is a design-build architecture program run by Auburn University which aims to teach students about the social responsibilities of the profession of architecture while also providing safe, well-constructed and inspirational homes and buildings for poor communities in rural west Alabama

My friend worked on the last house which is made of carpet.

Then the other day I saw this new project by the  where they are working to design an easily replicable housing plan where the materials and labor cost under $20K aptly named 20K House.  Check it out here.  The designs aren't as adventurous or modern as their other work but still simply beautiful.
